Electricity in rural Haiti is a scarce commodity. While we think of treadle sewing machines as something from an antique store or our grandmother's attic, they are an extremely valuable and useful item to Haitians. These machines are located in Vieux-Bourg where the Sisters at John Paul VI School have started a small trade school program for students to help them learn a trade. On the day I visited, the girls were receiving certificates of completion and were justly proud of their accomplishment. |
