There is much in this picture. It captures the hope and love that the people of Haiti have for their children. Despite their abject poverty they struggle to afford the meager sum necessary to send their children school. They carefully clean and press their little dresses and uniforms every night. Those that work at the schools carry this love forward with beautiful little touches such as the raised heart welded onto the school gate.

The children respond to this love with the bright smiles and inquisitive stares at the foreigners who have come to visit. In the midst of the seemingly unending struggle that is Haiti are these wonderful islands of hope and happiness.

Unfortunately, I am not a photographer. As a result some of the most overwhelming and moving images that I view are not recorded because I am too personally involved in witnessing them to think about taking a photograph. For example, after a large rainstorm the massive holes in the road in Carrefour become filled with water forming in essence small ponds in the street. As any one who has driven in Haiti will tell you the road in Carrefour is at its best a congested mess of large trucks, busses and cars. Through this maze of moving steel a father rode on an old bicycle with his 2 daughters dressed in their clean, neatly pressed school uniforms. The littlest sat on the handle bars the older stood on the back fender holding onto his shoulders as he with rolled up pants rode through the traffic and 2 foot deep puddles to make sure his daughters arrived at school on time and properly dressed, a true triumph of love and the human spirit.
