This photo of the town square of Baraderes is typical of the isolated towns in southern Haiti. To reach Baraderes it is necessary to travel a mountain road (the term road is used in its loosest sense) for literally hours, a road impassible to anything other than an excellent 4 wheel drive vehicle moving at a snails pace. This is as good as it gets in Baraderes. There are no nicer areas. There is one phone line but no one knows when it last worked or when it will work again. Cell phones are useless in this isolated valley and the large generator does not function and if it did the cost of fuel would likely be prohibitive. Like the rural poor throughout Haiti, the people of Baraderes have been largely ignored as most of the aid is consumed by Port au Prince and other accessible cities. |
