This is the tap to the cistern at Ecole John Paul II in Baraderes. On the days I was in Baraderes the temperatures were in the high 90s, the humidity was at least 70% and not a breeze was stirring. This tap to the fetid water contained in this cistern is the only source of water for the children at this school. However, since the cistern was dry not even this source was available. Because the school is built on a rock hill, the only way to get water to the school is with a pump and generator. In isolated towns such as Baraderes these are luxury items that struggling schools for poor children simply cannot afford. So in this heat indexed 100 plus degree heat, the children must simply go without water. |
